The Seat of Government in the Republic of San Marino.

Republic of San Marino

It is claimed that the Republic of San Marino is the oldest republic still in existence in Europe. The whole country really is just one Mountain, the 3-peaked Mt. Titan. Its population is 25.000 and the medieval city of San Marino is one of the most lovinlgy preserved in Europe. No vehicles are allowed in the old city, and the San Marinesi actually live at the foot and slopes of the mountain going to work in the old city by foot or funicular. San Marino is surrounded by Italy.
It is situated 10km inland from the coast and from the top of its First Tower there is a breathtaking view of the Adriatic. In a clear day you can see across to the coast of Croatia

The First Tower.
There are three Tower forts in San Marino,
one on each of its mountain peaks.
They are depicted on the Coat of Arms of the Republic.

The Second tower.

The political system of San Marino is unique. It has two Regents (Capitani Regenti) from two opposing political parties. They stay in office only six months and then two new ones take their place. So, in a way there is perfect control from all citizens on the doings of their leaders.

I remember climbing the winding streets to the old city from its "Gateway"of Burgo village. (-I am scared to death of the funicular-). Fortunately is was springtime and I did not have to cope with the cold as well as the climb. But it was well worth it. In the old City one travels in the past. Everything is preserved in its original form. And the views over the countryside is something to remember. The excellent meal in one of the restaurants serving the specialties of the region ended a perfect day.

The main industry of the Republic is Tourism. 3.500.00 visitors flock to it every year. The San Marino Grand Prix F.1 at the end of April each year gathers all the Formula 1 afficionados....And No, the circuit does NOT pass through San Marino. It is at Imola nearby, but San Marino lends it its name....

Anyone travelling to Italy's Emilia Romagna or the Marches would find it worth while to visit this tiny country with such a long history.
