Because of the bad state of non-existing roads, we frequently had to "borrow" Jungle paths, wide enough to have our Beetle crawl through them, in order to go from one town or village to the next. Although it took a long time to negotiate our way through thick undergrowth, it did give us the opportunity to look at whatever fauna the civil war and ensuing famine spared. I did not see any lions, something that I regret. They told me that the few that were left alive, retreated eastwards to Cameroon and the Central African Republic. In 1978, the then Nigerian Government, imported lions from Britain's Safari Parks to re-populate the area.

 A beautiful Antelope | |

The omnipresent Buzzard.
They were everywhere.

Monkey staring at the camera, not shy at all. We sometimes had them in our garden,
in Port Harcourt, where they would come right up
to the kitchen window and try to steal food.

There were also the snakes of course.
Green Mambas, Black Mambas and Pythons.
However when we saw them we did not linger long enough to take a picture..:)).
This picture of a python was safely taken from the web site

The antelop and buzzard photos are from © Emil Shchulthess' book "Africa".
